disaster relief

Just a thought...
I heard about quite a bit of outrage that Congress failed to pass a disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Sandy until after they passed a budget. And I thought, "Wow, if a big disaster came through and destroyed my property, would I sit around in the rubble for 10 weeks waiting for the government to mail or deliver me a check to fix everything? Or if one of my neighbors suffered a tragedy such as a fire or tornado, would I drive by a hundred times and wonder when their government was going to clean up the mess."
No Heck, no. .I mean NO (in capital letters)! We'd get out our saws and our gloves and get ourselves out there to clean up the mess as quick as possible. We would make hot dishes and break out the crock pots and make meals. If the whole county was in disrepair, we'd drive to the next one to get supplies and roll up our sleeves. I don't think this is an issue of compassion at all. Not really, because if such a disaster was near, we would find a way to dig in and help.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that if we left disaster relief up to neighbors and friends, they do at least a hundred times better - quicker, more thorough, more compassionate.
Yes, I understand there are big buildings and infrastructure to repair and perhaps we could delegate that to the government because it's their stuff.
There. I said my piece. I formalized my thoughts. Now I will finish making the bread for my neighbor Pearl who is feeling quite overwhelmed right now with what is on her plate.
